An OTDR configuration must match the fiber and testing task. Singlemode capability does not establish multimode capability, and a standard OTDR port should not be assumed suitable for testing a live network.
Start with the link, not the platform name
Record whether the plant is singlemode, multimode or a mix, then list the required wavelengths and connector interfaces. VIAVI’s 4100-series page shows how a product family can contain different modules for different network applications. The platform name alone does not identify the capabilities of a quoted unit.
For short, connector-rich links, discuss event resolution and the test setup. For longer links, discuss range and the loss budget. If splitters are involved, include the topology and the required measurements. Ask the supplier to relate module specifications to that application.
Treat live-fiber testing as a separate requirement
VIAVI’s FTTH SLM manual says not to proceed on a non-filtered port or wavelength when traffic is detected. It describes live testing using a designated live OTDR port and filtered wavelength. This is a model-specific operating requirement, not permission to test any active link.
Tell the supplier whether the fiber will be dark or carrying service. Have the network operator and the manufacturer confirm the approved method, module, port and wavelength. Follow the exact instrument’s operating instructions before connecting equipment.
Details to compare on every proposal
- The complete platform and module part numbers.
- Supported fiber types and available wavelengths.
- Application-specific dead-zone and range information.
- Live-fiber capability, where required, and its operating constraints.
- Launch/receive cables, connector interfaces and inspection accessories.
- Reporting licenses, calibration records and service arrangements.
Check the report workflow too
Ask for an example of the output from the quoted configuration. Confirm that the required trace files and reports can be exported, and identify any software or subscription dependency. Equipment selection is incomplete if the crew cannot hand over the deliverable the customer requested.
