The Fiber Optic Association distinguishes OTDR measurements from cable-plant insertion-loss testing. An OTDR trace is useful for examining the link, but it should not replace the required source-and-power-meter loss measurement.
Before choosing a tester, obtain the customer’s test plan. Write down required measurements, wavelengths, test directions, reference methods and report format. Ask who approves the completed results. A product described as a fiber tester may not perform every required task in its base configuration.
